Given the opportunity to start with a clean sheet, the building is designed and operated to the highest sustainability standards. The imaging activities are resource intensive by nature, and thus there is a strong social responsibility to ensure that those resources are used in the most efficient and conscientious manner possible.
With this in mind, Amsterdam UMC has set very ambitious design targets based on BREEAM certification, the ‘Environmental Assessment Method’ of buildings developed by the UK-based Building Research Establishment.
An important element of the sustainable design is the creation of a positive, welcoming and healthy environment for employees and patients alike. Despite the fact that scans are best examined in the dark, the eye-catching feature of the new building is the amount of light within it. Architects’ firm Wiegerinck has designed a center that is bathing in a sea of light. Across the building, furniture is grouped into islands of calmness. There is a special room for children where they can stay in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Our entire center oozes professionalism, calmness, transparency and control.
The Amsterdam UMC Imaging Center is located on the campus of Amsterdam’s Zuidas business, science and health district, only 15 minutes away from Europe’s third largest airport, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, only 5 minutes away from international conference center RAI, and directly connected to the Amsterdam Zuidas train station (with direct European connections).
